Level 2 Commis chef apprenticeship

Who is the Programme for?

Our Commis Chef Apprenticeship is perfect for individuals passionate about the culinary arts, whether currently employed in hospitality or seeking a career change. If you dream of working in top-tier kitchens, gaining recognised qualifications, and progressing into senior chef roles, this program is for you.

To enrol in an apprenticeship, you must be employed in a relevant role with your employer’s support for training. Apprenticeships are work-based qualifications, so you need a job where you can apply your learning. You must also spend at least 50% of your working hours in England and have a valid right to work in the UK.

Programme Overview

  • Duration: 13 months
  • Location: Fully virtual classrooms with workplace-based learning

Key Responsibilities as an Apprentice

As a commis chef apprentice, you will:

  • Master essential cooking techniques, including chopping, slicing, baking, grilling, and frying.
  • Learn food safety protocols, allergen awareness, and dietary considerations.
  • Maintain a clean, hygienic kitchen following industry standards.
  • Ensure proper stock rotation, inventory management, and equipment maintenance.
  • Work closely with chefs, suppliers, and front-of-house teams.
  • Deliver high-quality dishes on time, adhering to customer expectations.
  • Support menu development by considering seasonal ingredients and customer preferences.
  • Contribute to menu refreshes and new recipe creation.

Certification

At the end of the Apprenticeship, the apprentice will receive a Level 2 Commis Chef Apprenticeship Certificate – Issued by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).

How does the funding work?

Apprenticeships are funded through a levy scheme operated by HMRC, deducting 0.5% of annual payrolls above £3 million. Employers can access this fund by partnering with approved providers like Cherith Simmons.

For smaller organisations, schemes provide 95% funding, which we can access on your behalf. Currently, funding is worth £9,000 per apprentice, making the training effectively free except for the accreditation fee.
